I was recently asked by a Hand Tool School member to provide a list of good chisel brands to aid him in buying. That’s actually a pretty tough question to answer seeing as I don’t have more than 5 minutes of fiddle time with more than a couple brands. So I started to think about what I like about my favorite chisels, and for that matter which one is my favorite chisel. My favorite chisel isn’t pretty, it’s beat up pretty badly and has lots of patina on the socket handle and the blade. The handle has a ratty leather washer on top, and I don’t think I can even free it from the socket any longer. It is a Buck Bros. Here’s the thing, this chisel fits my hand like a glove.

Mostly ignoring the results of generations of tool and technological advancement, a violin maker is interested in an older tradition, and uses tools that were optimized hundreds of years ago. Ours is a craft that has remained largely unchanged for years. So I can make a violin in a well-appointed shop with band saws, lathes, mills, and jointers there has been some technological adaptation , but I can also make a violin on a mountainside, without electricity or plumbing.
On a non-industrial scale, the hand tools are less hassle, produce less harmful dust, and are really fun to travel with through the violin-making learning curve. Other violin makers look for efficiency and cleverness when they see what tools you use to build your instruments, and part of learning how to make a violin is spent understanding how each hand tool will ideally work. Traditionally, there was a different chisel for just about every job. A fine bevel edged chisel left compared to one of my heavy duty Marples bevel edge chisels. Traditionally, the firmer chisel would have been a general purpose choice. These are square across which gives them plenty of strength for the light morticing and such. A strong chisel, with beveled edges is a good combination. The registered chisel front , along with the more standard, thinner variant, the firmer chisel, both have parallel edges.
These are super strong, but not nearly as versatile as the heavy-duty bevel edged chisel back. For myself, ensuring that sharpening is swift and routine , is probably more important than the tools themselves. I can optimise my edge for a task, just as you may create a point on a pencil when adding detail, or form a flat for shading. This means that having just a few chisels on the bench, is enough to make an uncompromising tool kit.
The changes you make will be to optimise the cutting angle as required, and maybe even the shape of the bevel. For full details on optimising your edges in this way, check out our Get Sharp video Series: We teach everything you need to know about sharpening chisels and plane blades efficiently.
